Cherry Blossom or Cherry Flower?

Although the season of full bloom has passed around here, you can still enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms in some places. The English word for cherry blossoms is "cherry blossom," but why not "cherry flower"? Both mean "flower," but "flower" refers to the whole flower and "blossom" refers to the flower on a fruit-bearing tree.
