Harufutei Koasa has been a driving force behind the modern rakugo boom as a pioneer of rakugo, including successful performances at the Nippon Budokan and 30 consecutive days of solo performances at the Hakuhinkan Theater.

Born in Tokyo in 1955.
Introduced to Harufutei Yanagisyo in 1970.
In 1980, he was promoted to shinuchi at the age of 25, surpassing 36 others.
Since then, he has successfully given the first solo Rakugo performance at the Nippon Budokan, a three-night solo performance at the Kabuki-za Theater, a solo performance at the Shinbashi Enbujo Theater, and a thirty-day consecutive solo performance at the Hakuhinkan Theater.
As an actor, he has given a number of successful solo performances, including the lead role in the Shinjuku Koma Theater's "Koi, Koi, Ukere Shinigami", as well as the TV period drama "Sanzoku ga Kakeru !", the NHK historical drama "Atsuhime" as Tadahiro Konoe, "Ganshi Kanpei" as Mitsuhide Akechi, and "Kirin ga Kuru" as Kakujo, the Tendai zamoto (master).
As for his writing activities, in 2022, the 100th anniversary year of Bungeishunju, he published a rakugo collection "The Day Kikuchi Hiroshi Becomes Rakugo," in which he adapted Kikuchi Hiroshi's short stories into rakugo, as one of the 100th anniversary books. In November 2022, he performed the first ever one-month performance of Kabuki & Rakugo "Collaboration Chushingura" at the main performance hall of the National Theatre, Tokyo, attracting attention from various quarters. In addition, he performed with living national treasure Tamasaburo Bando at the Minami-za Theater in Kyoto last July and at the Shochikuza Theater in Osaka in January of this year, attracting much attention. This year, he will continue to perform together. While always respecting the traditional art of rakugo, he continues to take on new challenges, and at the same time, he is committed to spreading rakugo and passing it on to future generations.
He has received the Broadcasting Performance Award, the Asakusa Performing Arts Award, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize, and other awards.
In the spring of 2020, he will receive the Medal with Purple Ribbon, and in February 2022, the 43rd Matsuo Performing Arts Award for Excellence.
